A First-Hand Look at Lyon: Why This Destination Works So Well for Corporate Events
There are some destinations that look good on paper and then there are those that truly deliver when you experience them properly. Lyon falls very much into the second category.
I recently had the opportunity to visit Lyon as part of a pre-Familiarisation trip, followed by a three-day journey onboard the Scenic Sapphire. The purpose was simple: to explore the city and surrounding region through the lens of a corporate event planner assessing venues, understanding logistics, and most importantly, seeing what would genuinely work for clients.
What became clear very quickly is that Lyon offers something quite special. It’s not just the food, the history, or the setting it’s how easily everything comes together.
Arriving in Lyon: Easy, Efficient, and Immediately Impressive
One of the first things that stood out was how straightforward it is to reach Lyon. Arriving into the main station, transfers into the city centre are quick and efficient, something that always matters when coordinating group travel.
We checked into the InterContinental Lyon - Hotel Dieu, and it set the tone straight away. This isn’t just another five-star hotel- it’s a landmark. The building itself carries so much history, but it’s been restored in a way that still feels modern and relevant.
The scale of the property makes it particularly well suited for high-end groups. There’s a real sense of arrival here, especially when you step into the main dome area. For corporate groups, that first impression is everything and this is exactly the kind of place that delivers it without trying too hard.
After a quick turnaround, we headed out to explore, walking through the city towards Place des Terreaux. It’s one of those areas that immediately gives you a feel for Lyon which we would describe as open, lively, and surrounded by architecture that tells its own story.
We also spent time at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, which is not only culturally significant but also worth noting from an events perspective. Spaces like this can be used in really creative ways, whether for private tours, receptions, or more intimate evening experiences.
Walking the City: Why Lyon Works Logistically
One thing I always look at during a site visit is how practical a destination is, not just how it looks.
Lyon is incredibly walkable. Key venues, hotels, and cultural spots are all within relatively close proximity. For corporate groups, this makes a huge difference. It reduces reliance on transport, keeps schedules running smoothly, and allows for a more relaxed, enjoyable experience overall.
The old town (Vieux Lyon) in particular offers something quite unique. The narrow streets, hidden passageways, and historic courtyards create a completely different atmosphere compared to more modern business cities. It opens up opportunities for more creative programming, whether that’s guided walks, themed events, or exclusive-use venues tucked away from the main streets.
Venue Potential: A Strong Mix of Classic and Contemporary
From what we saw, Lyon strikes a really good balance when it comes to venues.
On one side, you have grand, historic properties like the InterContinental Lyon - Hotel Dieu, which are ideal for executive-level meetings, leadership retreats, or smaller high-end incentives.
On the other, there are more contemporary spaces that cater to larger conferences and modern event formats. What makes Lyon stand out is that these options don’t feel disconnected, they’re all part of the same compact city, which makes it easy to build a programme that flows well.
There’s also a noticeable flexibility from local suppliers. During our site visits, many venues were open to tailoring their spaces whether that’s reconfiguring layouts, offering exclusive hire, or adapting to specific client needs.
Food as a Central Part of the Experience
It’s impossible to talk about Lyon without mentioning food but from an event perspective, it’s worth going a bit deeper than that.
The city’s reputation as a gastronomic hub isn’t just about fine dining. It’s about variety, authenticity, and the overall experience. Whether you’re dining in a traditional bouchon or a more contemporary restaurant, there’s a real sense of place in everything you eat.
For incentive programmes, this is a huge advantage. Food becomes part of the storytelling something that guests remember long after the event itself.
We experienced a mix of venues during our stay, and what stood out most was consistency. Service levels were high across the board, and there was a genuine pride in what was being presented. That’s something you can’t always guarantee in larger cities.
Transitioning to the Scenic Sapphire: A Different Perspective
After our time in Lyon, we moved onto the Scenic Sapphire, which offered a completely different way to experience the region.
River cruising isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind for corporate events, but it’s something that’s becoming more relevant particularly for incentives and smaller group programmes.
What stood out straight away was how seamless everything felt. Once onboard, there’s a sense that everything is taken care of accommodation, dining, meeting space, and transport are all integrated.
For event planners, this removes a lot of complexity. It also creates a more contained environment, which can be useful for groups where networking and interaction are a priority.
Life Onboard: Practical for Groups, Not Just Leisure
The onboard experience itself was well suited to corporate use.
There are enough spaces to host small meetings or informal sessions, but also plenty of areas for guests to relax and connect. The service was consistent, and the overall atmosphere struck a good balance between luxury and comfort not overly formal, but still very polished.
From a planning perspective, this kind of setup works particularly well for:
It’s also worth noting that the changing scenery adds something extra. You’re not just staying in one place the destination evolves as you travel.
Burgundy: A Standout Experience for Incentives
One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to the Burgundy region.
This is where the programme really shifted from city-based exploration to something more experiential. The wine tasting itself was excellent but more importantly, it felt authentic.
There’s a big difference between a standard tasting and something that feels properly curated. Here, there was context and an understanding of the region, the vineyards, and the production process.
For corporate groups, this is exactly the kind of experience that works well. It’s engaging without being forced, and it offers a natural setting for conversation and connection.
Burgundy also has strong potential for more bespoke events. Private vineyard dinners, guided tastings, and smaller, exclusive experiences are all possible here and they feel genuinely special rather than manufactured.
The Value of 1:1 Meetings with Local Partners
A key part of the trip was the opportunity to meet suppliers through scheduled 1:1 appointments.
These sessions are always one of the most valuable elements of any Corporate MICE Forum. It’s one thing to see a venue it’s another to understand how the team behind it operates.
What came across clearly in Lyon is that suppliers are engaged and adaptable. There’s a willingness to collaborate and tailor offerings, which is essential when working with corporate clients who often have very specific requirements.
Since returning, we’ve already followed up with several of the partners we met, and new enquiries are underway. That, in itself, is probably the best indication of how useful the trip was.
Why Lyon & Burgundy Make Sense for Corporate Events
Looking at the bigger picture, there are a few key reasons why this destination works so well:
It’s also a destination that feels slightly different from the more obvious choices. For clients who have “been there, done that” with places like Paris or Barcelona, Lyon offers something fresh without sacrificing quality or infrastructure.
Final Thoughts: A Destination That Delivers in Practice
Spending time in Lyon and experiencing the region both on land and via the Scenic Sapphire really reinforced something important, this is a destination that works in practice, not just in theory.
From an event planning perspective, that’s what matters most.
At Fernwood Events, we focus on creating programmes that are not only well organised but genuinely engaging. This trip has given us a deeper understanding of what Lyon and Burgundy can offer, and more importantly, how to use those elements to create something memorable for our clients.
If you’re looking for a European destination that combines culture, accessibility, and high-quality experiences, Lyon is definitely worth considering.
